Wikipedia turned 20 years old this past JanÂuÂary. Do you rememÂber how you first heard of it? Or more to the point, do you rememÂber when you actuÂalÂly startÂed clickÂing on it when it came up in your search results? For me, Wikipedia first proved an essenÂtial resource for learnÂing about music: on it I looked up my favorite bands, then found my way to entries about all the peoÂple, events, places, and things assoÂciÂatÂed with them. (I then truÂly felt what it meant to go down an interÂnet “rabÂbit hole.”) HavÂing been intrigued by, for instance, the music of BriÂan Eno, I disÂcovÂered through Wikipedia the world of ambiÂent music, of which Eno’s work conÂstiÂtutes only one part.
Two decades on, Wikipedia itself has become ambiÂent music. LisÂten to Wikipedia, writes co-creÂator MahÂmoud HasheÂmi, “is a real-time auralÂizaÂtion of Wikipedia growÂing, one edit at a time. The site is litÂerÂalÂly self-explanaÂtoÂry.” Even so, at that linked blog post HasheÂmi and his felÂlow develÂopÂer Stephen LaPorte explain that “Bells are addiÂtions, strings are subÂtracÂtions.”
SmallÂer edits sound highÂer ones, and largÂer edits lowÂer ones. “There’s someÂthing reasÂsurÂing about knowÂing that every user makes a noise, every edit has a voice in the roar. (Green cirÂcles are anonyÂmous edits and purÂple cirÂcles are bots. White cirÂcles are brought to you by RegÂisÂtered Users Like You.)”
It all sounds a bit like — and looks even more like — Eno’s “genÂerÂaÂtive music” apps. But LisÂten to Wikipedia adds a conÂsidÂerÂable verÂbal and intelÂlecÂtuÂal dimenÂsion, labelÂing each edit that bubÂbles up with the name of the relÂeÂvant page. Kawaii metÂal. Year of the Fifth CoaliÂtion. Tom Brady. Lee CounÂty, Texas. Do You Like HitchÂcock? Justin Bieber discogÂraÂphy. GeogÂraÂphy of GaelÂic games. CalÂiÂforÂnia DemoÂcÂraÂtÂic ParÂty. BasÂketÂball at the 1988 SumÂmer Olympics – Men’s tourÂnaÂment. All these names arose and vanÂished withÂin about a minÂute’s viewÂing, as did many othÂers of more deeply tanÂtaÂlizÂing obscuÂriÂty. If you feel temptÂed to look them all up on Wikipedia itself, count yourÂself among those of us who’ve known, for twenÂty years now, where the interÂnet’s real potenÂtial for addiÂtion lies.
